Absorption concentration (Buddhism)

  • Collectedness of mind
  • Ecstatic concentration

Description

Absorption concentration is more controlled and prolonged than access concentration. Unlike access concentration, where the jhana factors are not strong, here they are strong. Having interrupted the flow of bhavanga (life-continuum), the mind may continue in profitable impulsion. Collectedness of mind in the subjects of meditation not covered under access concentration brings to the saint who has entered jhana a state of living in bliss; to probationers and average persons it causes insight.

Context

According to Hinayana Buddhism, concentration is considered as of one kind (monad), of of two kinds (dyads), of three kinds (triads), of four kinds (tetrads) or of five kinds (pentad). In the first dyad, this is the unification that follows access concentration.
