Description
A technique in psychoanalysis when the individual relives a traumatic experience through hypnosis or in the waking state, "depotentiating" its affecting activity. The technique on its own was eventually considered insufficient or even harmful by both Jung and Freud, the former holding that integration of dissociation should be the aim, the re-experience enabling relationship with the positive side of the neurosis and hence bringing the affect under control.
