Appendicitis

Nature
The appendix is a small pouch from the large intestine. It has no known function, but can lead to a dangerous condition if it becomes infected. Although the appendix is located in the right lower portion of the abdomen, the pain of appendicitis often starts in other parts of the abdomen, making it difficult to diagnose.
Incidence
Appendicitis occurs in approximately one in every 500 people. Appendicitis can occur in all age groups, but is most common in teenagers and young adults.
