Rebel

Synonyms:
Anarchist
Revolutionary
Description:
Actively rejects or opposes some aspect of life encountered in society. Rebels, through their action, seek to avoid the influence of a particular structure, policy, lifestyle or political system or, through an attack upon it, to destroy it as a force in society. The primary characteristic of the rebel is defiance, which is manifest in refusal to participate in a specific aspect of society. The rebel, as opposed to the revolutionary, is not motivated so much by a vision of new order a desired as by the desire to destroy that which is experienced as oppressive. The rebel is a role often encountered in situations where people experience themselves restrained by political, economic, religious or racial systems of society. When such systems affect many people, rebellion can be manifest in corporate acts of destruction aimed at authority, such as rioting, fashions, language and music offensive to social norms, and creation of life-styles disruptive to social institutions. The rebel, while not clear about what is needed, is very clear about what is not needed and is willing to act against it, often violently. This action calls attention to injustice in society, and often occasions the broader reforms that improve conditions for the future. The rebel is often willing to fight, and may be a willing follower of someone who has a revolutionary vision of the future.
