Converting information for sustainable development decision-making

Synonyms:
Transforming data to assist decision-making in sustainable development
Context:
Agenda 21 recommends that countries and international organizations should review and strengthen information systems and services in sectors related to sustainable development, at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Mechanisms should be strengthened or established for transforming scientific and socio-economic assessments into information suitable for both planning and public information. Electronic and non-electronic formats should be used.

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 indicates that special emphasis should be placed on the transformation of existing information into forms more useful for decision-making and on targeting information at different user groups.
