Europe's Nato members can field around 2 million troops, a million more than the USA, and can muster more aircraft, ships and other equipment. But European military technology is markedly inferior to that of the USA, and Europe cannot deploy its forces in numbers without US transport. Only one in five European army units are deemed suitable for the rapid reaction missions typical of contemporary warfare.
