Employing non-drug measures for relieving pain

People feel less pain while participating in sports. There seems to be a difference in this effect between men and women. Women tend to gain this natural ability to inhibit pain directly from the activity itself, while men gain this ability from the thrill of competition. Researchers determined this by having college students participate in various activities and measured their pain tolerances by submerging their arms in ice water.
