Improving cooperation with industry on sustainable development strategies and programmes
Context: Global coordination and information exchange amongst industries and between industrial sectors could lead to more widespread action, and large industries can be encouraged to help small and medium-sized industries with voluntary action and implementing the 'triple bottom line' - social, economic and environmental accountability, or 'people, profit and planet'. The overall impact of industrial initiatives should be assessed and recommendations made on how they can become more effective.
Implementation: This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
