Cooperating with nature

Synonyms:
Enlisting cooperation of nature
Harmonizing with nature
Claim:
The American John Muir described nature not as a commodity but as a companion. Nature is sacred, Muir held, whether or not resources are scarce. Philosophers such as Emerson and Thoreau thought of nature as full of divinity. Walt Whitman celebrated a leaf of grass as no less than the journeywork of the stars: "After you have exhausted what there is in business, politics, conviviality, love, and so on, and found that none of these finally satisfy, or permanently wear -- what remains? Nature remains." These philosophers thought of nature as a refuge from economic activity, not as a resource for it.
