Integrating demographic and sustainable development concerns in education

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

There would be increased understanding in all sections of society of the interactions between demographic trends and factors, and sustainable development. Stress would be put on local and national action. Demographic and sustainable development education would be coordinated and integrated both in the formal and non-formal education sectors. Particular attention would be given to population literacy programmes, notably for women. Special emphasis would be placed on the linkage between these programmes, primary environmental care and the provision of primary health care and services.
