Improving social services for women

Synonyms:
Ensuring equality of social security treatment for women
Extending social security for women
Reducing discrimination against women in social services
Description:
Expanding the social security umbrella to cover all women, including women in the agricultural field, divorcees, widows and the elderly; providing the social care required by handicapped and aged women.
Context:
The law with respect to social security tends to reflect traditional and unequal concepts of the roles of men and women. It is increasingly widely recognized that social security, without imposing a model of society, has to take into account the diversity of family and social situations and individual choices, while guaranteeing equal protection and equal rights for women and men. Many national legislations are still based on a model of society in which the man is the head of the family and the women only benefits from protection derived from her husband's entitlements.
Implementation:
ILO identifies provisions in national legislations that ensure the unequal treatment of women.
