Wet rot of wood

Nature
Wet rot is commonly found in external joinery with relatively high moisture content. As paintwork cracks, spores of the fungus [Coniophora puteana] enter the wood and the fungus can reduce it to powder. The affected wood must be destroyed and the causes, such as faulty plumbing, eliminated.
Incidence
In the UK it has been estimated that 25% of the houses have dry or wet rot.
