Nature 
Trauma is an externally caused injury to the human or animal organism. Depending on the duration of the traumatic event, a trauma may be either acute or chronic. It may be classified according to the circumstances in which it occurred; for example, nonoccupational injuries, industrial accidents, or injuries resulting from athletic activity or military combat.
Background 
Traumatic injuries include cuts, punctures, lacerations and contusions, shell-type wounds, amputations, and multiple injuries (resulting mainly from traffic and occupational accidents).
