Nature 
The walrus, because of its large size, low reproductive rate, slowness in moving away from boats, gregarious nature, and the value of its ivory is one of the marine mammal species most vulnerable to over exploitation. It is estimated that less than 20,000 Atlantic walrus exist and the Pacific walrus population size is fluctuating widely in size do to crisis responses to depletion and uncoordinated simultaneous management by the USA and former USSR.
