Background
Chrysophytes are photosynthetic, unicellular organisms that are abundant in aquatic environments, but primarily in soil and freshwaters. Only a few species are known. The taxonomy is unclear with different treatments according to author. Some place the phylum in the Heterokontophyta, others in the larger grouping of Phycophyta (algae), and yet others in the Protista (recognizing their single cell nature).
