Obstruction of governmental medical reform

Nature 
The pharmaceutical and medical industries attempt to hinder the reform of laws for testing drugs and medical products, such as blood, so that they may continue to deliver the same products as previously. Having to upgrade products would cut into their profits, they claim.
Claim 
In 1995 in the USA, the medical industry paid large sums of money to finance politicians' electoral campaigns. These politicians, once elected, then came under pressure from the industry to pass legislature that requires the government to conduct exhaustive cost-benefit analyses before declaring drugs or food to be unsafe. This prevents or delays the removal of old unsafe drugs from the market, and protects the medical companies' profits.
