Nature 
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive degenerative disease affecting the nerves in the brain and spine controlling speech and movement, and is subcatagorized as such: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), and progressive bulbar palsy (PBP). The cause and treatment of the disease are currently unknown.
Incidence 
According to a 1993 UK report, motor neurone disease affects between 8-10 people per 100,000 of the population, which accounts for an estimated 5,000 sufferers in the UK. 40% of the disease's sufferers will survive for 5 years, and 10% will survive for 10 years.
