Moral panic

Nature
Societies everywhere are increasingly suffering from moral confusion and social anarchy. People no longer learn how to defend their moral beliefs, if indeed they have learned how to distinguish moral right from moral wrong.
Incidence
Moral panics may be engineered, notably by earlier evangelical Christians, often with the purest motives. Examples cited by sociologists include the white slave trade in the period preceding World War I, and the cases of ritual satanic abuse in the 1980s.
