Imbalances in types of ships built

Nature
Some liner operators in industrial countries have shifted to containerization of their major liner trades, so that the building of conventional liner tonnage has dropped. This reduces the flexibility of shipping services in the liner trades, and can cause an excess of container capacity and a deficiency of conventional liner tonnage for essential commodities that cannot be transported in containers.
