Nature
Opposition groups or individuals are often killed in order to eliminate movements critical of the regime. The victims may be trade-unionists, professionals, or simply those suspected of opposition. They may be assassinated in the streets, or abducted and subsequently found dead - often showing signs of torture. Even though these actions may be taken by 'death squads' with whom the government claims no association, there is often evidence to suggest governmental complicity.
