Discriminatory toys

Name(s):
Racially insulting toys
Gender-differentiated toys
Incidence
The toy industry is dominated by males both as producers and as consumers. A 1993 study in the United States found that three-quarters of the most advertised toys were aimed at boys. Another study found that, in a typical toy supermarket, 70% of the products were aimed at boys. When toy producers concentrate on products for girls, they tend to produce toys that focus on teaching girls how to be attractive to boys, claiming that this is what the consumer wants.

The Japanese manufacturers of "Dakko-chan", an inflatable black children's doll, ceased production in 1989 and did not renew the trademark when it expired in 1993.
