Denial of rights to development for indigenous peoples

Incidence
Following a peaceful demonstration in 1993 in favour of their demands for political and economic rights, the Nigerian government has reacted to mobilization of the Ogoni tribe with brutal repression. It declared Ogoniland a "military zone". Over 1,000 Ogoni have been killed in clashes with the military, eight vilages destroyed and its leaders imprisoned.
