An estimated 15 million of the 22 million people killed in wars since 1945 were non-combatants. In World War I, civilian casualties were 5% of the total. In World War 2, they accounted for 50%. In the 130 armed conflicts since 1980, civilians have been 80 to 90% of the casualties.
