Hierarchies, whether official or unofficial (depending on the society in question), are apparent in the structures of education. The terms primary, secondary, higher, professional, technical, or scientific are loaded with discriminatory overtones. The teaching profession is structured in terms of prestige; lowest status being accorded to the primary school teacher and the highest status to the university lecturer.
