The symbols of modern society which seem to point to a meaningful life are dominated by the economic processes. Pay scales create images of relative worth in society. Possession of goods determine self-esteem. Job perks motivate workers. Many of the rituals of society are dominated by the economy. Birthdays and Christmas are wonderful if many and costly presents are exchanged. Entrance into adulthood is acquiring car or a job. Retirement may be the most important rite of passage in modern society.
