Problem

Student immobility

Other Names:
Lack of foreign students
Hyperlocalized education
Nature:
Students in the Middle Ages were necessarily mobile, as the lack of books made personal dialogue among academics a necessity. Since the 19th and early 20th century development of university systems across the world, however, the proportion of students studying abroad has declined. Often the vast majority of foreign students in a country are those who lack adequate educational institutions in their home country. This lack of interest in the wisdom of one's neighbours leads to narrow perspectives and a decline in global communications.
