Problem

Inability to concentrate due to torture

Nature:
Victims of torture frequently experience an inability to concentrate even years after the events. The ability to learn new skills and to adjust to new situations is impaired. Physical damage as a direct result of blows to the head, structural change in the brain due to extreme stress or non-physical psychological problems may be the sources of this incapacity.
Incidence:
In a recent study of torture victims 45% complained of losses of memory or concentration. Most of the victims were young adults who were interviewed some time after being tortured.
