Nature:

There are general national or regional traffic prohibitions on Sundays and on public holidays, during summer holiday period in some countries, additional restrictions of limited duration are also enforced at other times of the year on certain high density road, local traffic prohibitions restrict night-time driving or transit through certain towns, and special prohibitions are applied to the transportation of dangerous goods and outside loads.

Annual cost of these restrictions has been estimated in the UK at over £200 million.
