Problem

Inadequate social security for migrants

Nature:

Migrants form a segment of society whose social security protection still leaves much to be desired. They may suffer from direct discrimination whereby non-nationals, especially those residing abroad, are excluded from certain benefits, or occasionally denied any coverage at all. Another discriminatory technique is that certain benefits are not paid to workers or members of their family who are resident or temporarily resident abroad. Entitlement to benefit may be subject to the completion of a period of insurance, employment, occupational activity or residence - a difficult condition for migrants whose career takes them from one country to another.
