Torture by exposure to animals

Exposing victims of torture to the attacks of animals increases fear, causes pain and re-enforces a sense of helplessness. Subjects have been attacked by dogs, had rodents and snakes crawl over them, and been bitten by insects at the initiative of torturers. Police dogs may be encouraged to have sexual intercourse with female prisoners.

Exposure to animals has been reported in the following countries:

[Africa] South Africa, Libyan AJ

[America] Colombia

[Europe] Poland, Romania

In a case documented by the United Nations in 1988, a police dog was forced to have intercourse with the girl friend of a South African detainee for periods up to an hour.
