Problem

Threatened species of Galemys pyrenaicus

Other Names:
Threatened species of Pyrenean desman
Nature:

Galemys pyrenaicus has declined because it is bound to a very vulnerable habitat in a restricted area. It is mostly threatened by water pollution and the construction of hydro electric plants which fragment the habitat. It has suffered from direct human persecution, through over-zealous collecting and from fishermen who perceive it as a threat to their stocks, especially trout. There is also concern regarding the accidental introduction of American mink Mustela vison in northern Iberia.

Incidence:

Estimates of population numbers of Galemys pyrenaicus are difficult due to the secretive nature of the species.

Galemys pyrenaicus is considered as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN.
