Lethal fumes in modern house fires

Incidence:

Modern homes are potentially lethal because of the toxic gases given off by burning furniture and other household materials. The most deadly fumes are from burning foam used to stuff furniture. Burning foam may produce gases reaching 1000 degrees centigrade. In 1985 there were 62,000 house fires in the UK which claimed 700 lives. Almost 500 of the deaths were caused by smoke.
