Species of Mustela have been persecuted for the fur trade and as a consequence of their percieved threat to livestock such as game birds.

Habitat degradation, fragmentation and the use of chemicals in agriculture and industry has had a significant effect on populations.

Incidence:
The extinction of the European polecat in England was probably due to intensive gamekeeping.
