Problem

Denial of right to inherit property

Other Names:
Unequal property inheritance
Disinheritance
Incidence:
In Belgium, should the house-owning partner of a single-sex or an unmarried heterosexual couple die, the survivor can inherit the property only with the approval of the late partner's family. Even if the family does approve, the survivor will lose most of the value of the house through inheritance tax (80% compared with 18% for a married couple and the same house).
