Many cities close down at night, and do not have adequate facilities for the evening entertainment of the population. Conversely, those cities which provide entertainment often do so on a lavish scale that is actually alienating. Those cities that do provide a few facilities often have their cinemas, cafes, ice cream parlours, etc, scattered throughout the community, so that each one cannot, by itself, generate enough attraction; furthermore, such scattered night spots attract crime. There are very few cities that have suitable centres of mutually enlivening night places, such as for instance a cinema, a restaurant and a bar together with a bookshop open till midnight or, say, a launderette, liquor store and cafe near to a meeting hall and beer hall.
