Problem

Unfair contests

Other Names:
Partiality in examinations
Jury bias in the award of prizes
Lack of impartiality of competition judges
Incidence:

For many years, three of the great French publishing houses have taken 80% of the top literary prizes. It is claimed the juries are made up of publishing houses' authors, who are bashful about voting against their own publishers. The advantage to the author-juror is book sales and the occasional offer of generous advances on unwritten work, a collected edition of their work, key interviews, or employment in the media.
