Within the Chinese understanding of health, Excess disharmonies are often associated with external pernicious influences, when a bodily function becomes overactive, or when there is an over-accumulation of some substance within the body. This condition is known as shi, meaning fullness or Excess of energy, leading mostly to Yang or hot symptoms such as inflammation, pain and fever. The pattern tends to be distinguished by loudness of voice, ponderous movement, heavy breathing, pains of the abdomen or chest, pressure and touch increase discomfort, scanty urination, thick tongue moss and strong pulse. Severe headaches are usually a sign of Excess.
Younger people and those with acute illness tend suffer from Excess disorders.
