Tibetan meditative states of formless absorptions

Description:
Concentration of the mind brings it to enter four states of formless absorption. These are the absorptions of limitless space, limitless consciousness, nothingness, and the "peak of cyclic existence" (samsara). This corresponds to the four higher trances (jhana) of southern Buddhism which have identical names for the first three stages. The Tibetan absorptions are in the Formless Realm which is the same as the arupaloka or immaterial sphere of the southern Buddhists.
