Setting the mind

Description:
Strong faith and aspiration are applied to setting the mind on the object of meditation and stabilizing its condition. In this first stage, three kinds of mental torpor or sloth that permit distraction (vikshepa) are overcome. The three are: lack of impulse; attachment to habit; and anticipation of failure. The associated power in this state is hearing.
Context:
This is the first of the nine states of mental abiding (navakara chittasthiti) in Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhism.<
