Manifestation of objects of perception

Context:
Tsung-mi, a chronicler of Ch'an (Zen), indicated the process whereby, in the unenlightened aspect of alaya-vijnana, intrinsic enlightenment is gradually overlaid by delusion and, in the enlightened aspect, the delusion systematically removed. Perceived objects manifest as the fifth stage in the downward process, as the third of three subtle appearances of phenomena, comparable to dreaming that one lives in squalor and misery and to seeing things that one likes or dislikes. This is counteracted by mastery of form.<
